Paying with a voucher code through Ozow.

Voucher lets your customer pay with a cash voucher instead of a bank account or a card.

They buy a voucher for cash at a retailer, then enter the voucher code at your checkout. No bank account, no card, no app.

That matters because over 20 million South Africans are unbanked, and many more have accounts they don't use online. If cash is how your customer holds money, a voucher is how they spend it on your site; and vouchers are the only Ozow payment method that reaches them at all.

How your customer pays

  1. Your customer buys a voucher for cash at a retailer.
  2. At your checkout, they choose to pay by voucher.
  3. They enter the voucher code.
  4. The payment is confirmed and your customer returns to your site.

Enabling voucher payments

Speak to your account manager to have voucher payments enabled on your account.

Once enabled, voucher appears on the Ozow payment page automatically. No separate integration is needed; it works through the Ozow integration you already have.

Things to know

This reaches customers no other method does. Someone paying by voucher generally has no alternative on your site. Enabling it isn't about giving existing customers another option, it's about being able to sell to people you otherwise can't.

A voucher is a bearer instrument. Whoever holds the code can spend it, and once it's redeemed it's gone. Treat a voucher code the way you'd treat cash: don't log it, don't email it, and don't ask a customer to send you one.

Voucher value and basket value have to work together. A customer's voucher is worth whatever they paid for it, which may not match your total.

Integrating voucher payments

Voucher works with every Ozow integration method, and nothing voucher-specific is required; once it's enabled on your account, it appears on the Ozow payment page automatically.

WooCommerce and Magento have dedicated voucher redemption plugins if you'd rather surface voucher as its own option in your store's checkout.
